Runners Hip

Runners Hip

My sister moved to Sydney from Brisbane 15 years ago. She enjoys keeping fit through gym and running activities mostly but dabbles in other forms of exercise. Christmas two years ago when she was visiting our family in Brisbane, said she had been receiving treatment for tight muscles around her left hip. In particular the front (quads) of her hip, also the glutes and hamstrings. I said how long has that been occurring ? She said on and off for two years. She reported her hip gets stiff after running but gym based activities where fine. I asked her if I could take a look at a few things and give my opinion on what could be the ongoing cause of her pain. I thought that was a long time to have ‘tight muscles’.

After I assessed her hip I thought she had some internal hip damage. The most likely with no obvious injury or incident was a degenerative labral tear (the cartilage ring around the hip joint) of her left hip. A wear and tear injury affecting footballers and runners alike.

I then explained what I though may be wrong with her hip that she needed a hip arthrogram and an review with a Sports Physician to work out the rehabilitation plan.

She followed this process and rang me several weeks later to update me. She was reviewed by a doctor who then referred her onto a hip orthopaedic surgeon.

The surgeon said that she had a labral tear and an arthritic hip. He said you have to stop running now or you will be getting a hip replacement by the time you are 45!!

Our clinicians understand that there is no such thing as ‘tight muscles’ for two years. There is always a pain driver that may not be obvious at the beginning but as prudent clinicians you must always be reassessing your clients to ensure good outcomes.
